What is hypermobility? It is a medical condition where the joints are very flexible and move beyond the normal range of motion. It is genetically inherited. People with this condition experience pain in the joints (finger, knees, elbows, shoulders and hips). Individuals with this condition are at higher risk for injury and joint instability. Scoliosis is more common in people with hypermobility.
Hypermobility can be linked to Ehler-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). There are many variations of this Syndrome which is diagnosed by a geneticist. The diagnosis may be the result of genetic testing, family medical history, personal medical history and/or flexibility test. The syndrome affects the joints, skin, bones and muscles.
Signs & Symptoms of EDS: (My symptoms)
- Joint hypermobility
- Frequent dislocations of joints
- Soft, smooth and stretchy skin
- Easy bruising
- Chronic Muscle and bone pain
- Early-onset osteoarthritis
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Dysfunction of Nervous System
- Cardiovascular abnormalities (mitral valve prolapse or aortic root dilation)
- Pregnancy complications
Holistic Treatment for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome pain can be treated effectively using a holistic or natural treatment. Patients with EDS have issues with collagen. Several supplements are particularly important for boosting the collagen in the skin and rebuilding elasticity. Some of the supplements that can help replenish skin firmness are Vitamin C, MSM, aloe vera, gelatin and hyaluronic acid. Apple cider vinegar, honey and vitamin D are important in restoring nutritional balance in the body. EDS symptoms may be successfully alleviated using a potentially synergistic combination of nutritional supplements. Some of the supplements I have tried in the past are calcium, coenzyme Q(10), glucosamine, magnesium, methyl sulphonyl methane (MLM), vitamin C, and vitamin K.
Additional elements of a holistic treatment plan include diet and exercise. Maintaining a healthy diet of whole foods and avoiding sugar can alleviate general pain associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Yoga and other stretching activities can also tighten and realign the body’s structure and relieve pain. Lifestyle changes were extremely beneficial for my EDS symptoms. The changes include nutritious diet, exercise and yoga. Avoiding sugar, corn syrup, allergens and processed foods also helped alleviate my symptoms. I tried all the supplements above and did not see much of an improvement in my symptoms. I still suffered from chronic pain for years after I changed my diet. Finally, 2017 brought a change to my life, I found nutrigenomics. Nutrigenomics was the key nutritional elements my body was missing. I had come to the conclusion years ago that my nutritional absorption and diet was deficient. It turned out I was completely on point, after 5 months of using the little yellow pill my muscles were softer, less tender and pain-free. I can’t claim that this is a cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease but I can tell you the root cause of disease is oxidative stress. I can tell you that treating oxidative stress is the only way to get to the root cause of disease and illness. The pain, numbness and nerve damage had all improved by reducing the inflammation and oxidative stress, aka the root cause. I could finally feel my muscles relax after yoga or stretching instead of certain muscles staying in constant spasm.
